The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is the latest in a long series of world summits organized by the United Nations that deal with central questions of humanity. Especially in the decade from 1992 to 2002, starting with the world summit on environment and development in Rio de Janeiro and ending with the Rio+10 conference in Johannesburg, there have been a number of world conferences organized around UN-related themes. At the WSIS, information and communication are on the agenda for the first time. The world summit is supposed to develop a common understanding of the information society.
